Celebrate Small Business Saturday

If you’re a small business owner, then you should know that there’s an important event coming up for your calendar. No, it’s not Christmas – it’s Small Business Saturday!

Every year, on the first Saturday of December, this not-for-profit campaign encourages consumers to support small businesses in their area, whether that’s by visiting independent shops or buying locally online. In 2017, £748 million was spent on Small Business Saturday, so if you want to get involved this year, here’s what you can do.

Register your business

The Small Business Finder is one part of the campaign – it’s an online database of small businesses up and down the country. It’s free to sign up, so register your business and location, and be part of the nationwide database that potential customers can use to find you.

Use the marketing materials

You don’t have to start from scratch with your marketing for Small Business Saturday – the website provides a free marketing pack (in both English and Welsh) when you create an account. You can also download logos to use online.

Get on social media

There will be plenty of buzz about Small Business Saturday on social media, so be part of the conversation by using the hashtag #SmallBizSatUK. Last year social media for the event reached over 115 million people, so there’s a big audience out there waiting to hear about your small business!

Join the bus tour

Since the 25th October, the Small Business Saturday bus has been touring the country, and you should still be able to catch it in the south of England before the beginning of December. At each stop the team will be offering business mentoring, and the chance to exhibit your small business to the public.

Find other local businesses

Part of the joy of Small Business Saturday is making connections with other businesses in your area, so get on the Small Business Finder and see if there’s anyone nearby you can link up with. You could do everything from running a joint promotion to meeting up for coffee and swapping tips.

Sign up for #SmallBiz100

Each year, in the 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday, one small business is given a special profile on the website and extra promotion on social media – this is #SmallBiz100. Although all the slots have been filled this year, you can apply to be featured in 2019 once the event is over.
